Mueller Airport
You know how you want to do something really badly, you just never get around to it? Maybe it’s that book you’ve always been meaning to read, that story you’ve had in your head but never quite put pen to paper.. or that John Hughes watching party you’ve never put together.
For me, I’ve wanted to go out and take photos of the old Robert Mueller Airport in Austin for several years. Ever since I first started seeing photos of the place appear on flickr in 2007.. some great shots by local photographers.. I wanted to take photos of this place before it was all torn down and gone.
And then I moved right as 2008 started. Away to Seattle, far away from Austin.
But then I moved back. And going to the airport and shooting was always on my to-do list, but I just never made it over there. Frankly, I wasn’t even sure there were any of the old elements still standing. I thought maybe it was all new housing already. Until I was at the Austin Modern Home Tour in February, and one of the houses on the tour was over there.. and I caught a glimpse of old signs and the old tower!
Then in April, Josh and I found ourselves back in the area, and stopped by after the food blogger potluck. And FINALLY, after years of wanting to.. I got to take photos of the old buildings and the airport. And this is what I saw…

Aimee,
I clicked through from VintageSeattle.org. This is great stuff! What a wonderful eye you have! I especially like the one of the platform canopies shot from low among the shrubs. What is it about these run-down industrial-ish places that I love so much? They’re junky, they’re dangerous, their a blight and a scar on the earth. Is it the melancholy of time passing, the wistfulness of realizing the vanity of human endeavor? Or is it that rust is just such a beautiful phenomenon?

These are fantastic! I wonder what they are going to do with the old tower?

I need to head over there at night with some strobes. I flew in/out of that airport when it was functional. Great shots.
