Cliff House 11.19.

Around and Around

Cliff House

So.. I’m still kinda sick. Mostly well, but still coughing. Which means I haven’t been out to many places in Austin the last week to take photos. So instead.. I bring you some from the archive.

These are photos from when Josh and I took a lovely week-long road trip down to California (from Seattle) back in late April. These photos were all taken close to Ocean Beach on the edge of San Francisco facing the Pacific. We just happened to be there on what was probably one of the windiest days of the year. My hair was blowing all over the place, and sand was blowing up onto my camera lens when we were walking on the beach. Also.. it was cold. I was wearing a jacket. Not exactly what I was hoping for on a vacation to California, but the views.. the beauty… it’s hard to complain when you’re looking at a gorgeous building like the Cliff House and looking out towards the blue-green ocean. Oh, this makes me want to go back.

I hadn’t heard of this place before. It is stunning!

What is that thing in the second to last photo labeled “giant camera”? Is it what it says it is? If so, what is its purpose?

Oh, I LOVE the Cliff House. It’s right off of Ocean Beach, a little north of where Golden Gate Park meets the ocean.

According to Wikipedia… “The Giant Camera obscura was built in 1948-49 as part of the Playland at the Beach amusement area. It was moved to a location next to the Cliff House when Playland closed and is still present in the Cliff House area”

It was closed when I was there, but.. here’s more info – http://sanfrancisco.about.com/od/environmentnature/p/sfcameraobscura.htm
